The Feast of San Sebastiano and the Baroque Valley

Our travel story takes place during the celebrations for the patron saint in Palazzolo Acreide, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, located on the slopes of the Iblei Mountains in the province of Syracuse.

On August 10th, San Sebastiano is celebrated at the exit of the Church with firecrackers, fireworks and thousands of strips of colored paper that rain down on the faithful and the bearers, in a riot of joy and emotion. The festival has been registered in the Register of Intangible Heritage of Local Interest according to UNESCO principles.

A highly anticipated event for its spectacular nature and popular participation that becomes an opportunity to visit this small village included in the list of World Heritage sites as late Baroque cities of the Val di Noto.

A walk through the alleys of the town to admire unique treasures such as Palazzo Iudica, famous for its long balcony supported by allegorical masks, the medieval quarter with its Castle, its important churches, the ancient tannery and the archaeological park of ancient Akrai.

The town overlooking the Anapo Valley is home to several museums including the Museum of Travellers in Sicily, including Jean Houel.

We will reach Buscemi in the late afternoon, the first eco-museum in Sicily, following an ethno-anthropological itinerary reconstructed inside the village where the authentic places of peasant civilization and ancient crafts are kept, including a visit to a still functioning water mill.

During our stay we will have the opportunity to taste typical local products such as the DOP oil of the Iblei and learn about ancient seeds with a visit to a local farm.
