Ragusa

and province

Food and Wine

The food and wine of the province of Ragusa is considered one of the most authentic and prestigious in Sicily, a perfect combination of the solid rural tradition of the Iblei and a refined contemporary creativity.
This area, often called "the island within an island," boasts a very high density of certified products and a food culture that revolves around the absolute quality of raw materials.

Hyblaean cuisine is distinguished by strong flavours and ingredients that tell the story of this limestone plateau:
Ragusano DOP and its cheeses, Modica IGP chocolate, Monti Iblei DOP oil.

The local gastronomy is a triumph of homemade breads and pastas and sweets made with almonds and carob.

The province is home to the region's only controlled and guaranteed designation of origin: Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG.

Nature

The nature of the province of Ragusa is defined by a unique landscape in Sicily: the Iblean Plateau, a limestone expanse crossed by spectacular canyons called "cave".

This territory, shaped over the centuries by human labor with thousands of kilometers of dry stone walls, offers a fascinating contrast between the harshness of the inland hills and the wild sweetness of the African coast.

The distinctive feature of the Ragusa area is its geology. River erosion has created deep, lush valleys that hide true natural treasures such as the Cavagrande del Cassibile Reserve and the Calaforno Forest Park.

Towards the sea, the landscape changes dramatically, offering some of the most unspoiled coastal stretches of the island such as the
Irminio River Mouth Nature Reserve, Punta Cirica, and Porto Ulisse.

Here, Ragusa's natural beauty is inseparable from the rural landscape. The province is the kingdom of carob and olive trees, which, along with the dry stone walls, form a unique "stone garden."

Popular Culture

The folk culture of the province of Ragusa is the expression of a soul that is both peasant and aristocratic, where traditions are guarded with almost jealous pride.
Compared to other areas of Sicily, here the folklore has a more austere and solemn character, deeply linked to the cycles of the Iblean land and to a religiosity that manifests itself with spectacular baroque celebrations.

The popular calendar is marked by events that transform the cities into open-air stages such as the celebrations for San Giorgio in Ragusa Ibla and Modica or the Easter celebrations of the "Madonna vasa-vasa" in Modica.

Ragusa's identity is written in stone and wood, inextricably linked to the processing of the local, dark, bituminous stone (pitch stone), used to decorate noble palaces and churches, creating unique chromatic contrasts with the white limestone.

Although widespread throughout the island, the Ragusa cart has a distinctive style, with paintings that favor bright hues and chivalric scenes created by historic families of decorators.

More than a simple construction, the dry stone walls are a collective work of art by the Iblean people, now recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage, a symbol of thousands of years of patience in shaping the landscape.

The Ragusa dialect retains archaic terms and a distinctive phonetic that reflects the geographical isolation of the Iblei. Popular culture lives on in the proverbs associated with the farm and the tales of storytellers, who once enlivened the town squares by recounting the hardships of rural life and the exploits of local bandits.
