Service Description

A unique experience Human beings are made of symbols with a multitude of meanings that can convey values, beliefs, customs, and traditions; in a word: the culture of a given society. Among the countless symbols that a society produces are musical instruments, true vectors of the culture that produced them. The lesson-concert on traditional European and Mediterranean musical instruments is a journey through Mediterranean and European musical culture, through traditional sounds and musical repertoires. The instruments take on a voice and tell of ancient wisdom and mastery, legends and stories passed down by word of mouth, from generation to generation; they become living witnesses of the past and the present; they tell of women, men, contacts and exchanges between different peoples and cultures, and of archaic rites that are still alive and relevant, as happens, for example, in many traditional festivals. The instruments will be described and played according to the organological categories to which they belong. We will then listen to: 1) aerophones: bagpipe a paru, modified-key bagpipe, Scottish bagpipe, Galician gaita, reed flute, double flute, brogna, Armenian duduk, chalumeau; 2) membranophones: Southern Italian frame drums, Maghreb and Middle Eastern frame drums, Irish bodhran, polytimbral tambourine, double-skinned snare drum; 3) idiophones: jew's harp (in all its forms and origins), azzarinu, castanets, spoons, conchitas, Maghreb zils, bones, cajon; 4) chordophones: the chitarra battente and the Calabrian lyre. The lesson will be led by a multi-instrumentalist musician. UPON REQUEST: Dancers demonstrating the dances. TARGET AUDIENCE: Adults and Children
