The snow pit of San Martino
San Martino delle Scale, a mountain village near Palermo.
Service Description
The hike begins in Villaggio Montano, following a picturesque, panoramic paved path that runs along the northern slope of Costa Neviera. Soon, entering the woods, we reach the Neviera, a place where ice was produced for the city's trade. From here, continuing along the hillside paths, we head towards Portella Rena, the watershed between San Martino delle Scale and Valle Cuba, considered the most beautiful valley in Monreale. The latter can be admired by crossing the trail upstream. Shortly ahead, we intercept the path that climbs towards Pizzo Neviera, the site of a clash between Rosolino Pilo and the Bourbon troops during the infamous "Expedition of the Thousand." From the monument, we continue downhill to return to San Martino along the panoramic paths that range from the Gulf of Palermo to the Madonie Mountains, Mount Etna, and the Aeolian Islands.
